How To Find Out Why Police Are In My Neighborhood

Updated May 9, 2023 – Sirens and flashing lights in your neighborhood can be scary, especially if you don’t know what’s happening.

If you believe you have concern to worry, there are things that you can do to find out why local law enforcement agencies may be in your neighborhood.

Keep reading for more information!

6 Things You Can Do To Find Out Why Police Are In Your Neighborhood

1) Call your local police department

You can call your local police department directly (using their direct phone number, NOT the 911 emergency line).

Give them the street address of where you see the police officer and they will tell you what they can.

Simply say something like “Hey, I’m not trying to be nosy but is there anything that I should be concerned about as a neighbor?”

Every state has different legal regulations on what type of information police are able to give out so don’t be surprised if your police department may not be able to give you detailed information.

Also – some police departments have a public relations officer that you may be able to contact in order to get information about your specific neighborhood. (Of course, if there’s an active investigation into the incident – the police may not be able to give you as much additional information as you may like.)

2) Check your police department’s social media accounts

Some police stations also use social media to keep their fellow citizens up to date on what’s been happening so you may want to check to see if your local police are doing that.

3) Contact your Neighborhood Watch contacts

If your neighborhood has a Neighborhood Watch you can contact them to find out if they have any safety concerns or crime alerts to share.

4) Check your neighborhood’s forum on NextDoor.com

Many (if not all) neighborhoods have an ongoing forum on Nextdoor.com. It’s filled with information that your neighbors are posting and responding to.

5) Go online to CityProtect.com for crimes in your area

You can also use the website CityProtect.com to find out the crime report in a specific area but the information may not include the immediate incident that is happening:

Just letting you know that when you use cityprotect.com you have to keep zooming in on the specific area to see the types of crimes that were reported.

6) Download police scanner apps for your phone

There are police scanner apps available that you can download. With these apps you will receive feeds from police, fire and EMS channels from everywhere in the country.

These feeds that you hear are not necessarily “live feeds” so what you listen to may be 24 hours old or perhaps older.

Check these apps from Google Play

Can I Find Out Why The Police Were At My Neighbor’s House?

If you are friendly enough with your neighbor you can certainly ask and offer your assistance if it’s needed. You may of course be told to mind your own business so be prepared for that.

If your neighbor was arrested, then there will be a public report published online.

Each state and each county will have their own website for that information. Some examples are…

But I would caution you to be careful about snooping into other people’s business.

What Are The Different Types Of Police Units?

Understanding the different types of police presence in a neighborhood is an important aspect of community safety.

While it can be concerning to see police activity in your area, it’s important to know the various reasons why the local law enforcement agency may be present.

Here are the different types of police presence in a neighborhood:

Patrols

Police patrols are a common sight in many neighborhoods. Officers in patrol cars drive through neighborhoods looking for any signs of criminal activity, and respond to any calls for assistance.

A patrol officer is responsible for preventing crime, enforcing laws, and maintaining public order in their assigned areas. They may also perform traffic stops, conduct investigations, and make arrests when necessary.

Investigations

Investigations are another type of police presence in a neighborhood.

When a crime is committed, the police will launch an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect. Investigators will often interview witnesses, gather evidence, and analyze the crime scene in order to build a case against the perpetrator.

Investigations may take place over a period of weeks or months, depending on the complexity of the case.

Undercover operations

Undercover police operations are designed to gather information and evidence about criminal activity without being detected. Officers may pose as criminals or work undercover in businesses or residences in order to gather information about illegal activities.

Undercover operations are often used to target drug trafficking, prostitution, and other types of organized crime.

Specialized units

Police departments may also have specialized units that focus on specific types of crimes or situations.

For example, a SWAT team may be called in for high-risk situations, such as hostage situations or armed standoffs. A K-9 unit may be used to track down suspects or locate missing persons.

Specialized units may also be involved in investigating financial crimes, cyber crimes, or other types of complex cases.

Community outreach

In addition to their law enforcement duties, police officers may also engage in community outreach activities. This may include participating in neighborhood watch programs, giving talks to community groups, or providing educational programs to schools.

Community outreach efforts are designed to build positive relationships between the police and the community, and to encourage residents to work with law enforcement to prevent crime.

As you can see, each type of presence serves a different purpose, but all are designed to maintain public safety and prevent crime.

It’s important for community members to be aware of the different types of police activity in their neighborhood and to work with law enforcement to create a great place to live in a safe and secure community.

How Do I Find Out About Crime In My Neighborhood?

Being aware of the crime statistics and type of crimes in your neighborhood or maybe one that you are planning to move into is a very good and safe thing to do. Especially if you are going to be living alone in that potential new neighborhood.

You can just go to Google and use any of the websites below to gather that type of information.

CityProtect.com – as mentioned above – this website will give you some stats on crimes that have been committed in your area. Knowing how many of each incident type (ie: property theft, break ins, violent crimes, etc) can help you spot crime trends.

Areavibes.com – gives you a livability score based on various factors which include crime data and statistics

Familywatchdog.com – The Family Watchdog website gives you a map of nearby offenders

Nextdoor.com – is a neighborhood forum of sorts where all types of general information is posted. Everything from local restaurants to community events (ie: farmer’s markets or art festivals) to referral requests and much more.

You can go to the website and sign up with your current neighborhood. You should see a category on the left menu called “Safety” and you can certainly check out what your neighbors are writing or you can submit your own question.

Spotcrime.com – type in an address and you’ll get a visual of the types of crimes within that area.

Spotcrime will also provide you with alerts if you sign up but honestly, many programs do the same thing.

The National Sex Offender Public Website is a free tool that can tell you if there are any sex offenders living in your area. This is publicly available because its a public safety issue.

All in all – it’s a good thing to be aware of your surroundings and that does include your neighborhood’s crime rate.

But you also want to be respectful of your neighbors’ privacy as well.

How To Start A Neighborhood Watch Program

Starting a Neighborhood Watch group is a great way to enhance community safety and deter crime.

Here are the steps to take to start a Neighborhood Watch program in your community:

  1. Gauge interest in the community

The first step in starting a Neighborhood Watch program is to gauge interest among your neighbors. Talk to your neighbors and find out if they are interested in participating. Explain the benefits of Neighborhood Watch and encourage them to get involved.

  1. Contact local law enforcement

Once you have a group of interested neighbors, contact your local law enforcement agency to let them know you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch program. They will be able to provide you with information and guidance on how to start the program.

  1. Schedule a meeting

Schedule a meeting with your neighbors to discuss the Neighborhood Watch program and its goals. Invite a representative from your local law enforcement agency to attend the meeting and provide information on crime prevention and safety.

  1. Elect officers

At the meeting, elect officers for your Neighborhood Watch program. These officers will be responsible for organizing meetings, communicating with law enforcement, and coordinating neighborhood patrols.

Typical officer positions include president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

You’ll also want to select block captains. A block captain is a key role in a Neighborhood Watch program.

Block captains are volunteers who are responsible for coordinating activities and communication within a specific area or “block” of the neighborhood.

Their main responsibility is to act as a liaison between the residents on their block and the Neighborhood Watch program as a whole.

  1. Set goals and guidelines

Establish goals and guidelines for your Neighborhood Watch program. Set goals for reducing crime and increasing safety in the neighborhood. Develop guidelines for conducting patrols and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement.

  1. Create a communication network

Establish a communication network for your Neighborhood Watch program. This can include a phone tree, email list, or social media group. The communication network should be used to alert neighbors about suspicious activity, upcoming meetings, and other important information.

  1. Conduct regular meetings and patrols

Schedule regular meetings and patrols for your Neighborhood Watch program. Meetings should be held at least quarterly to discuss neighborhood safety and any issues that have arisen.

Neighborhood patrols should be conducted on a regular basis to deter crime and identify suspicious activity.

Starting a Neighborhood Watch program can be an effective way to improve community safety and prevent crime. By working together, neighbors can create more secure and safer neighborhoods.

Final Thoughts

Seeing police activity in your neighborhood can be concerning and may leave you wondering why they are there. While you may not be entitled to specific information about ongoing investigations, there are several steps you can take to find out more about police presence in your community.

You can contact your local police department, check their social media accounts, consult with your Neighborhood Watch contacts, check your neighborhood’s forum on NextDoor.com, use websites like CityProtect.com and Spotcrime.com to find crime statistics, and download police scanner apps for your phone.

Remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ privacy and use caution when snooping into other people’s business.

By staying informed about police activity in your community, you can work with law enforcement and your neighbors to create a safer and more secure neighborhood.
